castles, fortresses and ruins – welcome to the Middle Ages
The robber baron`s castle called Sooneck in Niederheimbach is only 3 km away from Oberheimbach. A visit is a must as the interior rooms accomodate precious paintings as well as a collection of arms and armory.
Following the direction to Bingen within short distances you can see the castle Reichenstein in the town Trechtingshausen and the castle Rheinstein (directly opposite Assmannshausen).
They are part of the World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine awarded to this area by the UNESCO in 2002. Belonging to these outstanding features of the World Heritage are 40 castles, old forts and fortresses covering a 65 km scenic route along the Rhine between Bingen and Koblenz.
This density of castles is unique worldwide.
